Basic Meaning: one thousand seven hundred gong-an cases
Senses:
A thousand seven hundred cases of the gong'ans (kōans) 一千七百則 regarding eighty four thousand gateways 法門 to Buddhist teachings in the gong-an 公案 tradition of the meditation school 禪宗. The number of the thousand seven hundred cases indicates the large number of meditation appearing in the Jingde chuandeng lu 景德傳燈錄, Wudeng huiyuan 五燈會元, etc.
