Basic Meaning: Yishan Yining
Senses:
(1247–1317. ) Chinese monk of the Linji (J. Rinzai) school 臨濟宗. Founder of the Issan Branch 一山派, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan; also known as 一山國師. He arrived in Japan in 1299. Among his Japanese disciples is Kokan Shiren 虎關師鍊 (1278–1346. ), an accomplished scholar-monk. The recorded sayings of Yishan are included in the Taishō Canon, Issan kokushi goroku 一山國師語錄 T. 80 No. 2553.
