Senses:
(1533–1608). Korean monk from the mid-Joseon dynasty. Also known as Jeonggwan 靜觀. After he entered the saṃgha at age 15 in 1547, he studied the teachings of the Lotus Sutra under Baekha Seon-un 白霞 禪雲 and later inherited the Dharma of Cheongheo Hyujeong (淸虛休靜). Along with Samyeong Yujeong (四溟惟政; 1544–1610), Pyeonyang Eongi (鞭羊彦機; 1581–1644), and Soyo Taeneung (逍遙太能; 1562–1649) he is one of the four major disciples of Hyujeong. Unlike Hyujeong who advocated the position of the saṃgha participating in the resistance to the Hideyoshi invasion, Ilseon was opposed to this view and advised Hyujeong to return to his duties as a monk after the war was over. Ilseon passed away at the age of 76 in 1608. He left many disciples such as Imseong Chung-eon (任性冲彦; 1567–1638) and Taeho 太浩, thereby forming a major branch of Korean Seon. A collection of his poems can be found in the Jeonggwan jip 靜觀集. [Juhn Ahn]
