Basic Meaning: Saptakoṭibuddhamātṛkā

Senses:

  • Sapta-koṭī-buddha-mātṛ. 'The mother of seven koṭi of buddhas.' A reference to the uncountable and extensive virtue of the transformation body of Avalokitêśvara 觀音. A figure in the Court of Omniscience 遍知院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. White-yellow 白黃色 in color and seated on a red lotus with eighteen arms adorned with bracelets of conch shell 白螺 (śaṅkha) and holding various items. Seed syllable: bu (derived from buddha). Mudrā: lotus añjali 蓮華合掌. Mantra: namaḥ saptānāṃ samyaksaṃbuddhakoṭīnāṃ tadyathā oṃ cale cule cundi svāhā. Also called Cundī 准胝 and Cundī-Avalokitêśvara 准胝觀音, counted as one of the six Avalokitêśvaras 六觀音. In the maṇḍala she represents wisdom which leads beings to unexcelled enlightenment 無上菩提.
