七士身

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: sevenfold human body

Senses:

  • The body animated by the eternal ātman. This 'immortal 常住 body' is composed of seven constituents: earth , water , fire , wind , suffering , pleasure , and vitality   〔 發智論 T 1544.26.1027c28〕 . The sevenfold human body is said to be indomitable and invulnerable to being cut by knives, just like Mt. Iṣikā 伊師迦山. 〔大毘婆沙論 T 1545.27.991a28〕 . From the perspective of the Sarvâstivādin 說一切有部 editors of the Jñānaprasthâna and the Mahāvibhāṣā, this is one of the species of tīrthika (non-Buddhist 外道) views. (Zhu, 64)
