Basic Meaning: seven kinds of birth and death
Senses:
The seven kinds of mortality, chiefly relating to bodhisattva incarnation. There are various sets. The Fo Guang Dictionary: (1) delimited birth and death 分段生死, (2) birth and death of entry into the flow of suffering 流來生死, (3) birth and death opposing the flow of saṃsāra 反出生死, (4) miraculous birth and death 變易生死, (5) birth and death of causes and conditions 因緣生死 (bodhisattvas from the first to the ninth ground), (6) birth and death with remainder 有後生死 (bodhisattvas of the tenth ground), (7) birth and death without remainder 無後生死 (at the stage of perfect enlightenment).
