三三昧

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: three samādhis

Senses:

  • (Skt. samādhi-traya; Pāli tayo samādhī). These are:
    1. The samādhi of emptiness 空三昧; to free the mind of the ideas of me and mine and suffering, based on oneʼs insight into emptiness.
    2. The samādhi of no-marks 無相三昧; to be rid of the idea of form, or externals, based on the insight into the emptiness of all phenomena. I.e. the 十相 which are the five senses, and male and female, and the three existences 三有.
    3. the samādhi of noncontrivance 無願三昧; to be rid of all desires, based on an insight into the emptiness of all things, also termed 無起 and 無作.
    There are two modes of each of these three: contaminated 有漏 (called 三三昧), and uncontaminated 無漏 (called 三解脫).   • Three forms of mental attention in regard to cognizing objects in terms of coarse apprehension (vitarka) and fine analysis (vicāra) .
    1. mental attention with coarse apprehension and fine analysis 有尋有伺三昧
    2. mental attention with only fine analysis 無尋唯伺三昧
    3. mental attention with neither coarse apprehension nor fine analysis 無尋無伺三昧

  • In the Satyasiddhi-śāstra 成實論 the three kinds of mental attention of
    1. partially cultivated mental attention 分修三昧: cultivating either wisdom or concentration .
    2. cooperatively cultivated mental attention 共修三昧: cultivating concentration-then-wisdom, or wisdom-then-concentration.
    3. noble mental attention 聖正三昧: cultivating both together. 〔成實論 T 1646.32.335a23
