Basic Meaning: three refusals and three requests
Senses:
A reference to when the Buddha was preaching the Lotus Sutra 法華經. At the beginning of the Chapter on Skillful Means 方便品, it firstly highly praises the Tathāgataʼs two kinds of wisdom 二智, but the ultimate reality behind all things is very profound and wondrously sophisticated, so the Buddha is hesitant to preach until Śāriputra 舍利弗 earnestly requests on behalf of all disciples. Thus, the Buddha and Śāriputra made three refusals and requests to each other, and after the third request from Śāriputra, the Buddha agreed to expound the Dharma in detail.
