三洲白龍

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Sanshū Hakuryū

Senses:

  • (1669–1760) A Japanese monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 who was born in Kumagaya, Musashi (Saitama prefecture) on the first day of the fourth month. He was the child of the castle head in Ōsato-gun. From early on he desired to become a monk and he entered a temple at the age of eight under Manzan Dōhaku 卍山道白 (1635–1714). When he was fifteen he studied under Gesshū Sōko 月舟宗胡 (1618–1696)—first concentrating on the precepts before moving on to the sutras, but he then took in interest in seated meditation and traveled to study under masters such as Gaoquan Xingji 高泉性激 (1633–1695) and Duzhan Xingying 獨湛性瑩 (1628–1706). In 1690 he returned to Gesshū, but the next year he moved to study at Zuiryūji 瑞龍寺 in Etchū (Toyama prefecture), and then three years later he took up residence at a hermitage in Sagami (Kanagawa prefecture). In 1693 he inherited the dharma of Manzan, whose funeral he would later oversee in the eight month of 1711. In 1730 he took up residence at Daijōji 大乘寺 and then in the ninth month of 1737 at Myōgen'in 妙玄院. His works include Manzan kōroku 卍山廣錄 (49 fasc.), Shūtō fukkoshi 宗統復古志 (1 fasc.), and Zenkai yūjin 禪戒游刃 (1 fasc.). He passed away on the eighth day of the fourth month at the age of ninety-two after eighty-three years in the monkhood. 〔語錄附、塔銘〕 ; 〔大乘聯芳志〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): ZGDJT]
