Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: tablet for all the spirits of the three realms

Senses:

  • Memorial tablets inscribed with the phrase sangai banrei 三界萬靈 and enshrined to aid the salvation of the deceased. Also known simply as banrei hai 萬靈牌. Common inscriptions found on Japanese banrei hai include: (1) sangai banrei jippō shisō rokushin kenzoku shichise fubo 「三界萬靈十方至聖六親眷屬七世父母」 "All souls in the three realms, consummate sages in the ten directions, six [degrees of] blood relatives, seven generations, father and mother;" and (2) sangai banrei tō 三界萬靈等 All souls in the three realms, etc. The tablet used at the annual ceremonial offerings to 'all souls,' see 盂蘭盆. 〔大鑑禪師小淸規〕 [Lisa Kochinski, Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura,Soothill,Yokoi]
