Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: three forms of faith

Senses:

  • Three forms of faith according to the Yogâcārabhūmi and the Cheng weishi lun. These are belief in reality 實有 (Skt. vastu), in oneʼs possession of good qualities 有德 (Skt. guṇavant ), and in oneʼs real capacity 有能 (Skt. *śaktivant ) to realize these good qualities in practice. These three forms of faith are also articulated in Sthiramatiʼs 安慧 commentaries on the Mahāyāna Five Aggregate Treatise 大乘五蘊論 (Kramer 2014, 43; Derge Work No. 4066: vol. 136, folio/line 213a.5), and on the Triṃśikā 唯識三十頌 (Derge Work No. 4064: vol. 136, folio/line 156a.1), as well as in Vinītadevaʼs commentary on the Triṃśikā (D 4070: vol. 138, folio/line 29a.4). See Vallée Poussin (1928, vol. 1, 320–323) for annotated translation of the pertinent passage from the Cheng weishi lun, fascicle 6. 〔瑜伽師地論T 1579.30.389a29; 成唯識論T 1585.31.29b23
