三觀

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: three contemplations

Senses:

  • Three observations taught in the Yingluo benye jing 瓔珞本業經 that were later elucidated by Zhiyi智顗. These are:
    1. the view of emptiness 空觀, which negates mistaken notions of common-sense reality.
    2. The view of dependent arising, which cancels extreme attachment to emptiness 假觀 (also see 從假入空)
    3. the middle view 中觀, which utilizes either of the above but is not attached.
    See also 中道第一義觀 (Skt. trividho'bhisamayaḥ). [Charles Muller; source(s): Nakamura, JEBD,Hirakawa, Iwanami]
  • The three kinds of meditation taught in the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment 圓覺經. These are
    1. śamatha 奢摩他, the form of meditation in which the mind is stilled by concentration on an object;
    2. samāpatti 三摩鉢提, which is contemplative meditation utilizing a Buddhist conceptual framework such as dependent arising, and
    3. dhyāna 禪那 which is the practice of nonabiding in either of the other two. One might easily draw parallels between these three and the three in the first part of the definition.
    [Charles Muller]
  • The three views of emptiness taught by Daoxuan of the Nanshan Vinaya school. See 南山三觀. [Charles Muller]
