Basic Meaning: three hindrances
Senses:
The threefold obstruction.
- the hindrances of affliction 煩惱障 (kleśâvaraṇa) denoting such afflictions as covetousness, anger, nescience, etc.;
- the hindrances from past actions 業障 (karmâvaraṇa); and
- the hindrances of painful retribution 異熟障 (報障) (vipākâvaraṇa), in being reborn in this world of pain. (Skt. āvaraṇa-traya, trayo'ntarāyāḥ, trīṇyāvaraṇāni; Tib. sgrib pa gsum po dag)

Three levels of afflictive hindrances 心煩惱障。

(1) external hindrances 皮煩惱障—the basic afflictions of desire, ill-will, and folly, that arise in contact with external objects 六塵; (2) medial hindrances 肉煩惱障;—hindrances that occur in the three realms due to discrimination-based views 見惑; (3) internal hindrances 心煩惱障,—basic nescience 根本無明.
