Basic Meaning: three hindrances

Senses:

  • The threefold obstruction.
    1. the hindrances of affliction 煩惱障 (kleśâvaraṇa) denoting such afflictions as covetousness, anger, nescience, etc.;
    2. the hindrances from past actions 業障 (karmâvaraṇa); and
    3. the hindrances of painful retribution 異熟障 (報障) (vipākâvaraṇa), in being reborn in this world of pain. (Skt. āvaraṇa-traya, trayo'ntarāyāḥ, trīṇyāvaraṇāni; Tib. sgrib pa gsum po dag) 〔倶舍論
