Basic Meaning: superior-vehicle Chan
Senses:
A self-description of the Mahāyāna Chan school, which considers that it alone attains the highest realization of Mahāyāna truth. Abhidharma realizes the selflessness of person, but not the selflessness of phenomena. The Mahāyāna doctrinal schools realize the selflessness of phenomena, but only Chan goes completely beyond these two, cutting off all thought in sudden enlightenment.
