Basic Meaning: making a living by cultivating the land

Senses:

  • One of the 四邪命食 four non-Buddhist means of living, i.e. for a monk to earn his livelihood by bending down to cultivate the land, collect herbs, etc.; opposite of 仰口食, i.e. making a non-Buddhist living by looking up, as in astrology, fortune-telling, etc. (Pāli adhomukha) 〔翻譯名義集 T 2131.54.1151a27〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Soothill, Yokoi, Hirakawa]
