不定性

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: indeterminate nature; inconclusiveness

Senses:

  • Sentient beings whose predisposition for degree of attainment of enlightenment is not determined; also written 不定姓. One of the five different types of proclivities for enlightenment 五性各別 hypothesized by the Yogâcāra school. It is thought that within this indeterminate nature there are four different types of combinations: (1) the nature that is not determined between the two of śrāvaka 聲聞 and bodhisattva; (2) the nature that is not determined between the two of pratyekabuddha 獨覺 and bodhisattva; (3) the nature that is not yet determined between the three of śrāvaka, pratyekabuddha, and bodhisattva 菩薩, and (4) the nature that is not determined between the two of śrāvaka and pratyekabuddha. Among these, the three groups of (1) (2) (3) all contain the bodhisattva nature, and thus the proclivity for eliminating both kinds of hindrances of the afflictive and cognitive type, and proceeding toward a stage of enlightenment equal to that of the buddhas (Skt. aniyata-gotraka, aniyata). 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.45b6〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): JEBD, Hirakawa, Nakamura]
  • In Buddhist logic 因明, inconclusiveness in the argument, usually due to problems with the reason. See 不定因. [Charles Muller]
