不生不滅

Basic Meaning: neither arising nor ceasing

Senses:

  • Since all existences are empty, there is ultimately neither arising nor ceasing 生滅. This is one of the fundamental positions of the Mahāyāna schools. See also 不滅. 'Neither (to be) born nor ended' is another term for 常住 permanent, eternal; nothing having been created nothing can be destroyed; early Indian Buddhist texts saw this as a reference to the state of nirvana, no more births and deaths; Mahāyāna 大乘 in its Madhyamaka 中觀派 form extends it universally, no birth and death, no creation and annihilation. In either case, it is a state of liberation 解脫. Also written 無生無死.
