Basic Meaning: out of harmony
Senses:
Disturbed, agitated, out of whack; to be ill; dis-ease. In ancient India, sickness was understood to be the result of an imbalance of the four elements that comprised the body 四大不調 (in Skt. dhātu-saṃkṣobha). The Chinese correlative of this in terms of traditional medicine was the interpretation of sickness being the result of an imbalance in the Yin and Yang forces of the body, and since that imbalance was expressed with this term, it was also used to render the Indian concept (Skt. saṃkṣobha, bhrānta, vaiṣamya, adānta).
