Basic Meaning: world
Senses:
Conventional, mundane, worldly. The secular world. The logograph 世 means
'transient,'
while the logograph 間 means
'within.'
The transient world of phenomenal appearances. Used with similar connotations in early classical Chinese texts such as the Shiji 史記.(Skt. loka, laukika; loka-dhātu, sarva-loka, sarga, jagat; Tib. 'gro ba, 'jig rten pa) [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge; source(s): Nakamura, Yokoi, Iwanami]
The people of the world; this world; sentient beings 人間. The customs of the secular world; conventions 俗. [Charles Muller, Stephen Hodge; source(s): Nakamura]
In texts that discuss doctrines of levels of practitioners, this term is equivalent in meaning to
'unenlightened sentient being'
凡夫. In bodhisattva path theory, it usually refers to persons who are at the stage of the ten faiths 十信, ten understandings 十解, or ten practices 十行, thus being contrasted with the term
'transmundane'
出世間, which refers to the world perceived by enlightened practitioners, such as bodhisattvas in the ten grounds 十地, and buddhas. [Charles Muller]
The
'container world'
(器世間); the unconditioned realm (Skt. bhājana-loka). [Charles Muller]
(Skt. alokôttaratva, iha, *iha-loka, kusaṃskṛta, kṣetra, jaga, jana, jīva-loka, nara-loka, prajā, bhūta, bhūtala-maṇḍala, manu-jāḥ, mahā-jana-kāya, medini, loka-yātrā, lokika, lokya, laukikī, laukikya, vīthī, saṃsāra) [Charles Muller; source(s): Hirakawa]
