Basic Meaning: mundane teaching

Senses:

  • The teaching of this world, especially of birth-and-death; in this respect it is associated with the first two of the four truths, i, e. suffering 苦諦, and its accumulated consequences in karma 集諦. Rebirth and karma are mundane teachings. They encourage one to have faith and to maintain discipline (śīla). The mundane teachings are the teachings suitable for ordinary beings 異生 (pṛthagjana).
