Basic Meaning: Chūgan Engetsu
Senses:
(1300–1375) Japanese monk of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗. Ordained at age 13, he trained under Yakuo Tokken, Kengai Kōan, Unoku Erin, Tomyō Enichi, Zetsugai Sōtaku, Kōkan Shiren and others, going on to become the founder of the Chūgan Branch 中巖派, one of the twenty-four transmissions of Zen 禪宗二十四流 that reached Japan. He became head monk of Kichijōji 吉祥寺. He Traveled to China in 1325 and returned to Japan in 1332. [Michel Mohr, cmuller]
