Basic Meaning: primary cause
Senses:
According to Saṃghabhadra 衆賢, the primary cause of the cessation 滅 of a conditioned factor 有爲法 is the mark of impermanence 無常相—namely, the fourth of the four marks of the conditioned 四有爲相, also referred to as the mark of cessation 滅相 (See Mitomo 1989, 104; Matsushima 2009, 35). The mark of cessation requires the subsidiary mark 隨相 of the cessation of cessation 滅滅 in order to cease. However, what initiates the activation of the mark of the cessation of cessation to destroy a conditioned factor? Ultimately, for Saṃghabhadra, arising is the cause of cessation. The action of arising that destroys an immediately present factor was caused by the cessation of a previous factor, and so forth, ad infinitum.
