Basic Meaning: Kenryō
Senses:
(1708—1778). A monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 of Zen. His dharma name was Tōgan 棟巖, his secular surname was Ōtsuka 大塚, and he was a native of Ueno 上野 (Gunma prefecture). In 1721, he was ordained under Keihō 圭峰 (d.u.) of Myōeiji 妙英寺 (Gunma prefecture). Later he served as head monk 首座 under Honmyō 本明 in Chōrinji 長林寺 (Tochigi prefecture). After he inherited the dharma from Genmyō Ryūsen 高峰龍泉 (d.u.) of Kinryūji 金龍寺 in Ōta 太田, he moved to Kōtokuji 江德寺 in Yamadagun 山田郡 (both in Gunma prefecture). In 1751, he practiced in retreat, and in 1757 was appointed abbot of Chōrinji. He retired in 1777 and passed away the following year. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
