乾鳳寺

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Geonbongsa

Senses:

  • This temple is located at Geumgangsan 金剛山, in Goseonggun 高城郡, Gangwondo 江原道. It is said to have been founded by legendary missionary-master Ado 阿道 in 520 CE during the reign of Silla King Beopheung 法興王, and initially named Wongaksa 圓覺寺. In the early Joseon Dynasty King Sejo 世祖 (r. 1455–68) established the Royal Family Hall 御室閣 in this temple and designated it as a Vowing Temple 願堂. A century later Samyeong 四溟 used it as a militia camp for over 6,000 monk-soldiers fighting against the Japanese forces during the Hideyoshi Invasion 壬辰倭亂 (1592–98). After the war Samyeong served as ambassador to Japan and brought back many previously-stolen treasures, including an ancient reliquary of post-cremation relics 舍利 of Śākyamuni Buddha that he enshrined in this temple in 1605. After that it was one of the four largest temples in Korea until the 1930s, housing more than 700 monks. Unfortunately, it was totally destroyed during the 1950–53 Korean War due to its location near the DMZ. It has been partially restored since 1994, and is now a branch-temple of Sinheungsa 新興寺. Geonbongsa contains several Buddhist cultural properties including the Neungpagyo bridge 凌波橋, which is designated as Treasure #1336, its Gate of Nonduality 不二門, and the 7 steles 碑石 and 48 śarīra stūpas 浮屠 standing in the stūpa garden 浮屠苑. 〔朝鮮寺刹史料, 朝鮮佛教通史, 朝鮮寺刹三十一本山寫眞帳〕 [Ockbae Chun; source(s): FGD]
