Basic Meaning: twenty-five (stages of) existence

Senses:

  • (Skt. pañca-viṃśati-bhava) The division of the three realms that sentient beings transmigrate through into twenty-five sub-realms. In the desire realm there are fourteen existences, in the form realm there are seven existences, and in the formless realm, four existences. The twenty-five are grouped into the four evil destinies 四惡道, the four continents 四洲, the six heavens of the desire realm 六欲天, the four meditation heavens 四禪天, the heaven of the five pure abodes 五淨居天, and the four spheres of the formless realm 四空處天.
