Basic Meaning: five periods of five hundred years

Senses:

  • The five periods each of 500 years. In the tenth chapter of the Candragarbha-sūtra 大集月藏經 the Buddha is reported as saying that after his death there would be five successive periods each of 500 years, strong consecutively in power (1) of salvation 解脫, (2) of meditation 禪定, (3) of learning 多聞, (4) of stūpa and temple building 造寺, and finally (5) of dissension 鬥諍.
