Basic Meaning: Critique of the Chart Expounding the Five Ranks
Senses:
Goizusetsu kitsunan. One fascicle. Written by the Japanese Sōtō school 曹洞宗 monk Kenshū 謙宗 (1387–1460) and published in 1668. The full title of the work is Dōjō henshō goizu setsu kitsunan 洞上偏正五位圖說詰難. A critical evaluation of the Henshō goizu setsu 偏正五位圖說, compiled by the Rinzai school 臨濟宗 monk Shōtō 省燈 (n.d.) in 1363. In this comprehensive work, Kenshū thoroughly examines Shōtōʼs work line-by-line, affirming some points and severely criticizing others. Kenshū originally wrote the work as Japanese commentary to the original Chinese text (furigana). In 1451 a clean copy of the work was first made. It is considered essential reading for the study of the five ranks doctrine. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
