Senses:

  • (1 fasc.) A work written by Sōtō school 曹洞宗 monk Senmyō Gettan 全苗月湛 (aka. Dōzui 洞水; 1728–1803) and published in 1793. This work contains a careful scholarly analysis of various masters' interpretations of the concept of the five stages 五位 of awakening (cf. 正偏五位) and works to promote the superiority of the understandings of Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 (807–869) and Caoshan Benji 曹山本寂 (840–901). Also included are annotations for 五位顯訣, 洞山大師五位頌, 曹山大師五位頌, 曹山大師五位旨訣, and 同五相頌. The Goi kenketsu ganji kyaku is known as one of the leading commentaries on the concept of five stages, and it is important in correcting misunderstandings of previous commentaries and translations. The author Gettan is said to have spent over forty years writing it and also authored other works on the five stages such as 没絃琴 and 功勳五位傍提. 〔曹全、注解五〕 . [Stefan Grace; source(s): ZGDJT]
