Basic Meaning: verse on the five stages
Senses:
A versified comment 頌 on the four kinds of
'five stages'
of Dongshan Liangjie 洞山良价 (807–869), 洞山五位. These comments are composed of either three or four lines of seven-character verse 七言. The most famous of them is Zhuwei song 逐位頌 by Caoshan Benji 曹山本寂 (840–901), which comments on the
'five stages of correct and partial realization'
正偏五位. Other authors of this kind of verse include Dayang Jingxuan 大陽警玄 (943–1027), Fushan Fayuan 浮山法遠 (991–1067), Fenyang Shanzhao 汾陽善昭 (947–1024), Shishuang Chuyuan 石霜楚圓 (986–1039), Hongzhi Zhengjue 宏智正覚 (1091–1157), and Zide Huihui 自得慧暉 (1097–1183).
