Basic Meaning: five houses and seven schools

Senses:

  • A division in China of the Southern Chan school 禪宗. After bifurcating into the traditions associated with 神秀 Shenxiu and 慧能 Huineng respectively, the northern school continued as a unit, but the southern school branched five or seven. For the first five, called 五家 are the Weiyang 潙仰宗, Linji 臨濟宗, Caodong 曹洞宗, Yunmen 雲門宗, and Fayan 法眼宗.
