The five teachers who preserve and transmit the scriptures: a custodian (of the sutras), reader, intoner, expounder, and copier. [Charles Muller; source(s): Soothill]
A further division is made of teachers of a different era 異世五師 and teachers of the same era 同世五師. The first group includes Mahākāśyapa 迦葉, Ānanda 阿難, Madhyântika 末田地, Śāṇavāsa 舍那婆斯, and Upagupta 優婆掘多; another group listed with the Vinaya is Upāli 優波離, Dāsaka 大象拘, Soṇaka 蘇那拘, Siggava 悉伽符 (私伽婆), and Moggaliputra Tissa 目犍連子帝須. The five of the same era are variously stated: the Sarvâstivādas say they were the five immediate disciples of Upagupta, i. e. Dharmagupta, etc.
