Basic Meaning: five kinds of patient endurance

Senses:

  • Five kinds of tolerance. Originally articulated in the Renwang jing 仁王經. As explained by Zhiyi 智顗, these are five stages of patience developed by bodhisattvas within the scope of the distinct teaching 別教:
    1. self-control 伏忍; the causes of affliction and illusion controlled but not finally cut off, the condition of the ten abodes 十住, ten practices 十行, and ten dedications 十廻向;
    2. firm belief 信忍; i. e. from the first ground 初地 to the third ground 三地;
    3. patient progress towards the end of all mortality 順忍, i. e. fourth ground 四地 to the sixth ground 六地;
    4. [the realization of] the birthlessness of phenomena 無生忍; seventh ground 七地 through to the ninth ground 九地;
    5. extinction 寂滅忍; the patience that leads to complete nirvana; from the tenth ground 十地 to marvelous enlightenment 妙覺.
