Basic Meaning: five doctrinal schools and nine mountain schools

Senses:

  • A description of the official situation of the Buddhist saṃgha from the end of the Silla 新羅 through most of the Goryeo 高麗 period; see under 五教 and 九山. These would both be consolidated in the Joseon into the 'two schools' of Gyo 教 and Seon 禪. [Charles Muller]
