Basic Meaning: five stage progression for chanting the Buddhaʼs name
Senses:
A ritualized progression by which one intensifies the chanting of Amitâbhaʼs name in five steps. These involve chanting: (1) all six characters (
'namo Amituofo'
南無阿彌陀佛) in a slow, sonorous manner; (2) still slowly but rising in pitch; (3) at a moderate tempo,
'neither slow nor fast'
非緩非急; (4) while gradually accelerating; and (5) very rapidly and only the four characters of the Buddhaʼs name (
'Amituofo'
阿彌陀佛). Established by 法照 Fazhao of the Tang dynasty, known as 五會法師 from his brochure Wuhui fashi zan 五會法事讚.
