Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: five stage progression for chanting the Buddhaʼs name

Senses:

  • A ritualized progression by which one intensifies the chanting of Amitâbhaʼs name in five steps. These involve chanting: (1) all six characters ( 'namo Amituofo'  南無阿彌陀佛) in a slow, sonorous manner; (2) still slowly but rising in pitch; (3) at a moderate tempo, 'neither slow nor fast' 非緩非急; (4) while gradually accelerating; and (5) very rapidly and only the four characters of the Buddhaʼs name ( 'Amituofo'  阿彌陀佛). Established by 法照 Fazhao of the Tang dynasty, known as 五會法師 from his brochure Wuhui fashi zan 五會法事讚. 〔入唐新求聖教目錄 T 2167.55.1085a19〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Soothill]
