Basic Meaning: five aspects of consciousness-only
Senses:
In the Cheng weishi lun, five senses in which all phenomena are said to exist merely as consciousness:
- in terms of their own marks 自相, as the eight consciousnesses 八識 are the essence of consciousness.
- in terms of concomitance 相應, as the six categories of mental factors 六位心所 are the concomitance of consciousness.
- in terms of that which is transformed 所變, since the mind and mental factors are all transformed by the cognizing aspect 見分 and objective aspect 相分 of consciousness.
- in terms of derivation 分位, since the nonconcomitant factors 不相應法 are nominally established based on the their being derived from the mind, mental factors, and the form dharmas transformed by them.
- in terms of reality 實性, since they are the actual essence of the unconditioned dharmas 無爲法, mind, mental factors, form, and nonconcomitant dharmas.

Furthermore, when the principle of consciousness-only is explained based on the simple reason that all dharmas are indistinguishable from consciousness it is called the general interpretation of consciousness-only 總門唯識. When they are distinguished into five categories like this, it is called the specific aspect of consciousness-only 別門唯識. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, FGD]
