五種禪

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: five kinds of meditation

Senses:

  • Five approaches to meditation distinguished by Zongmi 宗密 in his Preface to the Collection of Chan Sources 禪源諸詮集都序 (T 2015.48.399b16). The five are:
    1. that of non-Buddhists 外道禪, which is wrapped up in non-Buddhist speculation, longing for enhanced spiritual states and distaste for lower spiritual states.
    2. that of ordinary people 凡夫禪, characterized by correct belief in cause and effect, nonetheless still longing for enhanced spiritual states and seeking to escape lesser states.
    3. that of lesser vehicle practitioners 小乘禪, practiced based on realization of the emptiness of self, but still deluded by the reality of phenomena.
    4. that of great vehicle practitioners 大乘禪, who practice based on the realization of the emptiness of both self and phenomena.
    5. that of supreme vehicle practitioners 最上乘禪, which is also called the pure meditation of the tathāgatas 如來淸淨禪, as well as one-practice absorption 一行三昧, and the meditation of thusness 眞如三昧, where one suddenly realizes that oneʼs own mind is originally pure, lacking affliction, and replete with uncontaminated wisdom.
