Basic Meaning: five skandhas

Senses:

  • Kumārajīvaʼs Chinese translation of the term 五蘊. 〔法華經 T 262.9.12a19〕 (Tib. 'khor rnam pa lnga; Skt. pañca-skandha) [Charles Muller; source(s): YBh-Ind, JEBD]
  • The five kinds of disciples of the Buddha:
    1. bhikṣu, 比丘 (Pāli bhikkhu);
    2. bhikṣuṇī 比丘尼 (Pāli bhikkhunī),
    3. śikṣamāṇā 式叉摩那 (Pāli sikkhamānā),
    4. śrāmaṇera 沙彌 (Pāli sāmaṇera),
    5. śrāmaṇerikā 沙彌尼 (Pāli sāmaṇerī).
    Among these, the bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs accept the full set of precepts; śikṣamāṇās receive the six rules 六法 and the śrāmaṇeras and śrāmaṇerikās receive the ten precepts 十戒. 〔大智度論(卷十)〕 [Charles Muller]
