Basic Meaning: five practices

Senses:

  • The five practices of the bodhisattvas taught in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra 涅槃經:
    1. the three disciplines 聖行;
    2. compassionate deeds on behalf of sentient beings 梵行;
    3. spontaneous acts on behalf of others 天行;
    4. manifest good suitable for secular people and lesser vehicle practitioners 嬰兒行;
    5. appearing in a suitable manifestation for those in need of help 病行. 〔涅槃經 T 374.12.472a7

  • In the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra, five kinds of temperament, or behavior (carita), that are to be overcome:

    3. dull temperament [moha-carita] 癡行
    4. self-satisfied temperament [māna-carita] 慢行
