Basic Meaning: five omnipresent mental factors
Senses:
Five mental factors 心所 that are understood to be functioning in all instances of consciousness 遍行 (more fully named as 五遍行心所) (Skt. pañca-sarvatraga). These are:
- contact 觸 (Skt. sparśa; Tib. kun 'gro lnga);
- focusing of attention 作意 (Skt. manaskāra);
- sensation 受 (Skt. vedanā);
- conceptualization 想 (Skt. saṃjñā),
- volitional impulse 思 (Skt. cetanā)
Their omnipresence is defined in terms of their:
- operation in all three moral qualities of wholesome 善, unwholesome 惡, and indeterminate 無記; thus they are said to be present in all natures 一切性.
- presence in all stages of existence 一切地, which means that they function in all nine levels 九地 of the three realms 三界.
- their presence at all times 一切時.
- their presence in each other 一切倶.
