Basic Meaning: five paths

Senses:

  • The five destinies of: hell-being 地獄, hungry ghost 餓鬼, animal 畜生, human being 人間 and god 天上. Also written 五趣 (Skt. gati-pañcaka). When the category of asura 阿修羅 is added to the five destinies, there are then six destinies 六道. [Charles Muller; source(s): Yokoi]
  • Five paths taught in Yogâcāra texts that constitute five stages in the removal of affliction and the attainment of enlightenment (also commonly written as 五位; see that entry for a more detailed explanation.).
