Basic Meaning: five kinds of evil livelihood

Senses:

  • The five improper ways of gain or livelihood for a monk, i. e.
    1. changing his appearance, e.g., theatrically; performing miracles.
    2. advertising his own powers and virtue; showing of his merits.
    3. practicing fortune-telling, physiognomy, etc.
    4. hectoring and bullying in a large voice to scare people.
    5. praising the generosity of another to induce the hearer to bestow presents.

  • According to Daoxuan 道宣 (596–667) in his Sifenlǜ shanfan buque xingshi chao 四分律刪繁補闕行事鈔:
    1. For personal gain reforming standard observances and dishonestly displaying strange signs
    2. Speaking of oneʼs own merit
    3. Loudly displaying oneʼs power
    4. Speaking of oneʼs own attainments to prompt offerings
    5. Divining the fortune of another for gain
