Basic Meaning: five kinds of evil livelihood
Senses:
The five improper ways of gain or livelihood for a monk, i. e.
- changing his appearance, e.g., theatrically; performing miracles.
- advertising his own powers and virtue; showing of his merits.
- practicing fortune-telling, physiognomy, etc.
- hectoring and bullying in a large voice to scare people.
- praising the generosity of another to induce the hearer to bestow presents.
Also written 五邪.

According to Daoxuan 道宣 (596–667) in his Sifenlǜ shanfan buque xingshi chao 四分律刪繁補闕行事鈔:
- For personal gain reforming standard observances and dishonestly displaying strange signs
- Speaking of oneʼs own merit
- Loudly displaying oneʼs power
- Speaking of oneʼs own attainments to prompt offerings
- Divining the fortune of another for gain
