五部律

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: five versions of the Vinaya

Senses:

  • Tradition states that one hundred years after the death of the Buddha, there were five disciples under Upagupta, the fifth saint who inherited the teachings. It is thought that at that time, there were five separate versions of the Vinaya 戒律 (the part of the Tripiṭaka elaborating the rules of the Buddhist order). These are:
    1. the Four Part Vinaya (Sifen lü; Dharmagupta Vinaya) 四分律 (T 1428)
    2. the Ten Recitations Vinaya (Shisong lü; Sarvâstivādin Vinaya) 十誦律 (T 1435)
    3. the Five Part Vinaya (Wufen lü; Mahīśāsaka Vinaya) 五分律 (T 1421)
    4. the Prâtimokṣa-sūtra 解脫戒經 of the Kāśyapīyas
    5. the Vātsīputrīya Vinaya (not extant)
The Vinaya of the Mahāsāṃghikas 摩訶僧祇律 (T 1425; K 889) has been substituted for the missing fifth work; see also 五師. 〔摩訶止觀 T 1911.46.77a17〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): JEBD, Soothill, Yokoi]
