五部祕經

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: esoteric texts of the five buddha groups

Senses:

  • The five principle sutras of esoteric Buddhism. In the Tōmitsu 東密 tradition (i.e. Shingon 眞言宗), these comprise 1) Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經, translated by Śubhakarasiṃha 善無畏; 2) Vajraśekhara-sūtra 金剛頂經, translated by Amoghavajra 不空; 3) Susiddhi-tantra 蘇悉地經, translated by Śubhakarasiṃha 善無畏; 4) Yogin-sūtra 瑜祇經, translated by Vajrabodhi 金剛智; 5) Jingangding yujia zhong lüechu niansong jing 金剛頂瑜伽中略出念誦經 (abbr. 略出念誦經), an abridged translation of the Vajraśekhara Yoga made by Vajrabodhi. The Yaolue niansong jing 要略念誦經, an abridged translation of the Mahāvairocana-sūtra made by Vajrabodhi, is considered by some sects to be a sixth principle text, or as a substitute for the Lüechu niansong jing. The first three of these five are the most important sutras for the Shingon school. In the Taimitsu 台密 tradition (i.e. esoteric Tendai), the first four texts are the same as for the Tōmitsu; however, the fifth text is replaced with the Putichang suoshuo Yizi ding lunwang jing菩提場所說一字頂輪王經.
