五陰譬喩經

Basic Meaning: Sutra on the Metaphor of the Five Aggregates

Senses:

  • The Wuyin piyu jing; Also called 五蘊譬喩經. One fascicle, trans. attributed to An Shigao 安世高; T 105, K 743. The Buddha uses a number of metaphors to show the ephemerality of the five aggregates. The foam in the Ganges is compared to form 色; the bubbles in the summer monsoons are compared to feeling 受; the summer heat is compared to perception 想; plantains are compared to volition 行 and illusory images are compared to consciousness 識. Thus the five aggregates are each themselves empty 空, and should not be attached to. (Skt. *Pañca-skandhôpama) [Charles Muller; source(s): Hirakawa]
  • In the Chusanzangji ji 出三藏記集 (T 2145.55a6, Sengyou 僧祐 attributes Wuyinyu jing 五陰喩經 to An Shigao 安世高. He also notes that Daoan 道安 attributed Wuyinpiyu jing to An Shigao. However, on the basis of style and terminology, Zürcher (1991) suggests that, although it is no doubt archaic, the text is definitely not the translation of An Shigao or his team. [jn.park]
