  • (1767–1852) Eminent Seon master of the Joseon period. Also known as Baekpa 白坡, and Gusan 龜山. In 1778, at the age of 12 he was tonsured by Siheon 詩憲 at Seonunsa in Gochang, and received the Buddhist precepts from Yeon-gok 蓮谷. In 1790, he moved from his original residence at Yongmun-am 竜門庵 in Chosan to Yeongwon-am 靈源庵 in Bangchangsan where he studied under the renowned Hwaeom 華嚴 master, Seolpa Sang-eon (雪坡尙彦; 1707–1791). A year before Sang-eon passed away, Geungseon received the Buddhist precepts from Sang-eon. He established himself at Unmun-am 雲門庵 and made a reputation for himself. He received the teachings of Xuefeng Yicun 雪峰義存 at Guamsa 龜岩寺 in Yeonggusan 靈龜山 where he also received the name Baekpa. In order to practice Seon meditation he returned to Yongmun-am where he also established a samādhi and prajñā society 定慧結社. He subsequently returned to Unmun-am to compile his masterpiece, the Seonmun sugyeong 禪門手鏡, a commentary on 'Linjiʼs three phrases' (臨濟三句). Choui Uisun (草衣意恂; 1786–1866) later wrote a famous critique of the Seonmun sugyeong. Geungseonʼs writings also include the Suseon gyeolsa mun 修禪結社文, the Taegoamga gwaseok 太古庵歌科釋, the Sikjiseol 識智說, the Ojonggangyo sagi 五嬀?綱要私記, the Seonyo gi 禪要記, the Jakbeop gwigam 作法龜鑑, among others.
