Basic Meaning: Rentian yanmu

Senses:

  • The Eye of God of Men; six fasc. compiled by Zhizhao 智昭 (n.d.). T 2006.48.300a-336a. Preface dated 1188. A collection of the principal teachings, important sayings, and verses of leading figures of the Five Houses 五家 of the Chan school 禪宗. It treats the five phrases 五句 and single-word barrier 一字關 of Yunmen 雲門; the five ranks 五位 of the Caodong school 曹洞, along with the teachings of Hongzhi 宏智, Weiyang 潙仰, Fayan 法眼, and so forth. Zhizhao, who was a monk in the Yangqi branch 楊岐派 of the Chinese Linji school 臨濟宗, spent some twenty years in compiling the work. It was revised in 1258, and an epilogue by Wuchu Daguan 物初大觀 (1201–1268) was added. When a second revision took place in 1317, Tianfeng Zhiyou 天峰致祐 (n.d.) provided a second epilogue.
