他增上

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: predominating effort with respect to others

Senses:

  • The predominating effort 精進 that the individual musters in order to stay the course of Buddhist practice leading towards liberation 解脫. This form of effort, in contrast to the predominant effort stemming from an individual desire for spiritual edification 自增上, stems from oneʼs intentions and motivations with respect to others.

According to Sthiramatiʼs Extensive Mahāyāna Treatise on the Five Skandhas (T 1613), the predominating effort with respect to others refers to the shame generated by being afraid 怖畏 of censure 責罰 or critique by others 議論. For example, an individual who is not a monk or nun might not feel ashamed for playing basketball in the public park, but a monk or nun might feel ashamed for playing sports and displaying behavior unbecoming of a monastic 不威儀. The predominant factor in the generation of shame in a monk playing basketball openly in the public park is the fear of the rebuke of monks who violate monastic precepts by members of the general public.
