Basic Meaning: Chronicle of the Successive Transmission of the Dharma Canon>
Senses:
Fu fazang yinyuan zhuan; 6 fasc., T 2058. A work on the transmission of the Dharma as claimed to be through the legitimate, pure succession of the twenty-four patriarchs 二十四祖, starting with Mahākāśyapa 摩訶迦葉, who succeeded the Buddha after his passing away. The compilers Tan Yao 曇曜, and Kivkara 吉迦夜 extracted and translated biographical materials on the twenty-four patriarchs from other works such as the Chronicle of King Aśoka 阿育王傳. According to Lidu Yi (pp. 132–137) this work was written with the aim of making the Dharma acceptable to the Chinese and preventing further persecution of Buddhism, as had happened under Emperor Taiwu in 446. Kivkara translated the Zabaozang jing 雜寶藏經 with Tan Yao circa 472 CE, and the Chronicle of the Successive Transmission of the Dharma Canon would have also been translated about this time. The Tiantai list of 24 patriarchs and the Chan and list of 24 patriarchs are thought to have received influence from this text. Reference:
