伊舍那天

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Īśāna

Senses:

  • The name of a heavenly being inhabiting the sixth heaven of the kāma-dhātu 欲界, sometimes said to be Mahêśvara 大自在天, who is one of the eight protectors of the world. Japanese sometimes read his name as Izana and identify him with the Shinto creation deity Izanagi. He is represented as chief of the outer Vajras 外金剛 in the garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅, with three eyes, and ornaments made from a skeleton. This is one of the older names of Siva-Rudra; one of the Rudras; the sun as a form of Śiva; Siva with his three fierce eyes and tusks. Also transliterated as 伊遮那天, 伊邪那天, 伊賒那天, 伊沙天, and translated as 自在天. 〔雜阿含經 T 99.2.254c28 〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Hirakawa]
