Basic Meaning: fallacious example; pseudo-example
Senses:
(Skt. dṛṣṭāntābhāsa). A mistaken example. In Buddhist logic 因明, one of the three fallacious components of a proof, the other two being the fallacious thesis 似宗 and the fallacious reason 似因, broadly divided into the two types of fallacious use of a positive example 似同法喩, and fallacious use of a negative example 似異法喩. Each has five variations, which amount to a total of ten variations of this kind of fallacy. Also because of the ambiguity of the term dṛṣṭânta, some of these fallacies are related to the concrete examples, and some to the major premise. See 喩十過.
